World Book Day is an annual celebration of authors, illustrators, books and the joys of reading. It provides the fantastic opportunity to to focus on reading for pleasure, supporting children's autonomy in book choice, and embedding a habit of reading that brings a range of benefits. We're always hugely excited to participate in World Book Day - a charity that offers every child and young person a book of their own.
As part of our exciting build-up to celebrate World Book Day, we invited all children to "Read Your Way" and unleash their creativity! We’re launched a fun (and tasty...) competition and challenged the children to find the craziest place to read... and our adventurous readers have blown us away! Our competition winners enjoyed reading in trees, dens, on climbing frames and whilst hanging upside down. We even had children reading at the hairdressers, on top of their shed, during a ballet lesson and in a bath filled with plastic play balls! Take a look at their crazy photos!
Westdale celebrated reading with such creative costumes! We've seen princesses, superheroes, Roald Dahl and fairytale classics, Paddington bears, a Hungry Caterpillar, a Gansta Granny, a Julia Donaldson's witch from 'Room on the Broom' and a dragon from 'Zog'. We had Sophie and her Tiger who came to tea. Some wizards and witches, including a very impressive...and very green... Elphaba!
Alongside our amazing outfits, we’ve been creating our own books, following illustration tutorials, and making bookmarks. Reading with new friends in the sunshine and listening to our teachers share their favourite stories has made for a brilliant day!
